The building, known as the house with the Sphinx , monument group B, was built between 1911 and 1928 as a collective housing. The building remarks itself through a valuable statuary group made by the famous sculptor Dimitrie Paciurea and represents a sphinx surrounded by two mythological characters.
In the last fifty years the building degraded strongly and when it was bought, in 2011 it had a very modest roof, result of a strong fire in the area and modest reconstruction with minimal means afterwards. The historical archives researches have shown an old air-photography made by Compagnie Aerienne Francaise in 1927 in which one can see the initial roof in a cupola shape. The discovery of this photography made possible the project. The dome, typical for the urban landscape of the XIX th century Bucharest, marks the accent at the intersection of Slanic and Coltei street and complete the monumentality of the existing building.
The Sphinx House represents a soul project for its beneficiary who bought, consolidated and restored the building in his wish to save a historic monument and to live in it. The upper part of the building where we made most of the interventions became his private house developed vertically on three levels, one in the existing historic part and the other two in the dome. The first and the second levels are his family offices.
Our main intervention on the building consists in consolidating the upper part ( the third level) as the rest of the building was already consolidated in a previous intervention , add a concrete slab above the third level on which rests the dome and of course creating the dome as the main feature of the building. The dome is made from layered timber wood and the plan was to leave all the structure visible from inside.
Even if we did not find the original plans of the dome, we recreated its shape and proportion using the golden section, a classical instrument in the aesthetic of architecture. The upper apartment develops vertically on three levels , having the day zone at the third level of the historic building where is also the access. The dome represents the private part of the house, the bedrooms are located in the first dome level and the relaxation, playing area in the second. The visual and functional relation between the levels is made through the staircase so from the entrance you can see the upper part of the dome.
Living in a dome is for sure an original experiment. Our client lives there already for a year with his family and their two kids and he seems very happy with it even if he has a lot of stairs to climb.
In Bucharest there are many buildings with dome but most of them are completely abandoned or the roofs don't have a function. We hope our project become an inspiration.
