The project benefits of a spectacular site, located near the city border, on the slope of a hill, having a direct view to a lake which will become an extension of the Danube Delta. The landscape includes the city of Tulcea, which ensures a rich panoramic view. Given the highly valuable position, the project had to integrate in the natural setting defined by the hill and also gain use of the views. A specific problem of the site was the accentuated declivity of the terrain which made difficult the access of vehicles on the land.
The program of the project consisted in a single-family house with three bedrooms, one hall for events and a winery in the semi-basement.
The daytime areas, which have been functionally divided, are expanding in several different spaces, such as the dining room, the living room, the office space and the guest room. These areas open up like camera lenses towards the city and the main natural element of the area – the water. In the semi-basement you can locate the bedrooms, the utility area and the wine cellar, their pairing was evolved from the argument of individuality, the “public” area being separated from the rest. Each piece/module is independent and detached from one another by a glazed staircase that follows the slope of the terrain. Since the main view point is located on the Northern side and the South is at the back of our building, we had to introduce several skylights to be able to introduce natural light inside the building. Having the back slope of the roof a perfect base for the solar panels, we also placed several items on the central modules. As a result of the special silhouette of the site and to facilitate the access, we designed the main entrance at the base of the hill with an approximately 30 m long underground access, towards an elevator that arrives at the houses ground level to the office area. Taking advantage of the more intimate backyard, we placed a private pool and a deck area with a small garden. The envelope of the house is designed to be ventilated, the facade is cladded with white fiber cement panels, several layers of rock mineral wool and a triple glazed window system, which will provide the building the quality of a passive house. Furthermore in the idea of sustainable energy sources, the house uses a pellet heating system.
We believe that through the adaptation of the house to the sloped terrain by having a half buried level, and through the use of alternative energy sources, the project could become not only an iconic image of the area but also an example of sustainable building.
